Wedding Invitation Guidelines

Getting your wedding invitations out the door not only gives your guests time to make arrangements to attend but also gives you a firm date and a timeline to work with.

We generally suggest that couples book their wedding venue prior to sending out invitations. Other vendors may be able to accommodate date changes but venues may not be as flexible.

Use the below as a general guideline for sending out invites!

Save the Dates

When to send out Save the Dates:

  • Local wedding: within 4-6 months of your wedding date
  • Destination wedding or for out-of-town guests: within 8+ months ahead
  • If your wedding is within 4 months, you may want to skip the Save the Dates altogether and move right to the formal invites!

Where to start? Book an appointment with Avenue16 Graphic Design and begin designing your custom invites.

Your Save the Date should include:

  • wedding date
  • location
  • wedding website

Formal Invitations

If your guests have received a Save the Date, the wedding invitation is really just a formality, with a lot more details!

When to send wedding invitations:

  • Within 2-4 months of your wedding date
  • For out of town guests or destination weddings, we suggest sending out within 4-6 months of your wedding date to give your guests ample time to make flight/accommodation arrangements

Your wedding invitation should include:

  • Who’s hosting
  • The request to come to the wedding
  • The names of the couple
  • The date and time
  • The location
  • Reception information
  • Dress code
  • Separate RSVP card

When Should You Date Your RSVPs?

As a general rule, your RSVP deadline should be 4 weeks before your wedding date. Ask your caterer and venue as well to ensure this is sufficient time to provide a final headcount.

If you haven’t heard back from your guests by that date, consider calling/emailing them for a response. Digital RSVPs may also help ensure that you receive responses instantly and that they do not get lost in the mail.

DIY Invitations

Looking to print your own invitations? Then work with a local printer, such as A&B Print Inc. or Lacasse Printing to make it come to life!
