Flowers have always played a special role on a wedding day and so it is important to select flowers that will maintain that fresh from the garden look all day.
There are a few steps you can take when handling fresh flowers on your wedding day.
Step 1: Select Flowers to Suit the Season
Consider a flower that has a better chance of enduring the heat of Summer or the chill of a Winter wedding.Β Ask your florist for some advise on what flowers will work best for the season of your wedding. For example, ordering tulips in any season can be a challenge as they open quickly and can wilt with the slightest amount of heat or dehydration, so the heat of summer might not be the ideal season for Tulips.
Step 2: Choose the Freshest Flowers
The second step is to ensure that the flowers you have selected are fresh as possible and that your florist is creating your designs 1-2 days before the event to ensure they are as fresh and beautiful as possible. If they have to start on Tuesday for a Saturday event, then they might be too busy to ensure the freshest product. It is always ok to ask.
Step 3: Hydrate Your Flowers
The third step is to keep your flowers hydrated throughout the day. This is simple for most centrepieces, as they will be designed in water, however, your bouquets may need more maintenance to keep them fresh.Β There are 2 great tricks to keeping bouquets fresh.
- The first is to transport them from location to location in water. Using a small amount in a vase will keep the stems wet without soaking the ribbons of the handle.Β Donβt forget to travel with a towel to dry the stems before placing them near your gown, so not to cause water marks.
- The second is to travel with a spray bottle to mist the flowers. This will keep them from wilting in the heat. They will sparkle in the sun as well which every photographer loves!Β This step is great for boutonnieres and corsages as well.
The most important thing to remember is that fresh flowers are fragile and must be handled with care. When setting them down, place gently to ensure that the petals are not damaged.
A little florist secret to wrap things up. Most roses can have over 50 petals per stem. If you find that they are starting to curl throughout the day, gently tear away a layer. Underneath will be a fresh petal to take its place.
LaPierβs Flowers would like to wish all those couples out there the best of luck. We are here to assist you with your special day!
