Wedding Flower Trends for 2022

Flowers are a universal language that every bride understands.

We reached out to some of our Florist vendors to highlight some of the top wedding floral trends of 2022, and here’s what they had to say:

THE BLOOM BOX

Trendy Wedding Flower Ideas

Flowers are the perfect way to express the love, energy, colour, and elegance of your wedding day. Especially if you’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, you want to incorporate your own style, but also stay up-to-date with the latest trends. Here are some trendy wedding flower ideas that may inspire you during the 2022 wedding season!

Pastel colour palette

After 2 years of the pandemic, it was time to change things up! Many couples have stepped away from the traditional white colour scheme and are leaning towards soft fluorescent colours. We will definitely be seeing a lot of blush pinks, peach tones, pale yellows, and lavender blooms this wedding season, mostly amongst hydrangeas, peonies, and calla lilies.

Semi-cascading bouquets

A trend that has made its way back from the 80’s with a roundly shaped styled bouquet that drapes down into an asymmetrical shape, rather than a tightly tailored arrangement. This trailing bouquet combines both greenery and full blooms to create layers of dimension. The best part is that you aren’t limited to a specific type of flower, it works for almost all blooms! However, if you want a more natural look, think of flowers that will drape effortlessly, such as clematis and orchids.

Dried and preserved floral

With the movement towards more sustainable products, dried and preserved floral options are expected to surge in the floral industry. Not only are these products better for our planet, they can also be reused to create a sentimental decor piece for your home! There are many unique dried and preserved products you can incorporate into your arrangements such as pampas grass, creating a light and boho-style look.

HEART AND SOLA CANADA

Fresh vs. Artificial vs. Sola Flowers. Which is Better for You?

Whether you’re a soon-to-be bride or groom, part of the entourage, or just starting to think about your future big day, one of the biggest decisions in planning a wedding is picking out florals.

Each wedding aesthetic is unique, and getting everything to be cohesive within your budget can sometimes be a challenge. Nowadays there are plenty of options for flowers that are fit for each couple’s needs, budgets, and preferences.

Fresh flowers have always been the go-to in the wedding industry, being the most traditional and popular option amongst couples.

Artificial flowers made of plastic and silk have quickly gained popularity because they can be preserved more easily.

Now, there’s a third, lesser known, option that combines the look of fresh flowers and the long-lasting nature of artificial flowers! They are called sola wood flowers. Sola wood flowers are flowers handcrafted from sola wood, found in Cassava plant roots. This same plant makes tapioca. Each root is carved into a different flower and hand painted to resemble the perfectly imperfect charm of a natural flower or to create something completely new.

Each flower option is dependent on your style, budget, and overall needs for your wedding. If you’re gravitating to a certain type of arrangement, go for it! Just be mindful of the inevitable pros and cons attached to each floral, so you can have a worry-free wedding with lasting memories afterwards.

  • Fresh Flowers: great for a traditional themed wedding, they bring a delicate feeling and scent to any setting. The downsides to the timeless florals are that they have flower species restriction depending on seasons, the natural pollen can cause allergies, they can have a negative environmental impact, and it can be a burden on your budget especially if you’re looking to preserve them.
  • Artificial Flowers: are a wonderful substitute for real flowers, as they’re lighter, cheaper and self-preserving. You’ll just have to be careful where you get them as they can sometimes look cheap, and are not environmentally friendly.
  • Sola Wood Flowers: are a beautiful alternative for fresh flowers, they bring a different feeling of uniqueness, are the most customizable, and are self-preserving. Solas might not look exactly like a real flower up close, but they are very cost effective and environmentally friendly.

At the end of the day, it’s your special time to celebrate your unification with the people you love by your side. Flowers are one of the many aspects that add that spark of beauty to the night and for memories to reminisce on.

HAPPILY ECO AFTER

The Pros and Cons of Choosing Sustainable Florals for Your Wedding

Pro: Foam-Free Florals are Better for Our Health

Floral foam contains many toxic chemicals that can irritate the skin on contact and once the wedding is over it goes in the landfill, breaks down into microplastics and leeches into our oceans. Choosing a florist that uses foam free mechanics for their designs is a lot better for our planet. If you’re worried that certain designs cannot be achieved without traditional foam, there are several new inventions (like Agrawool and The Oshun Pouch) that make any design possible while remaining free of harmful chemicals.

Pro: Helping Support Local Vendors

Choosing a local florist who sources from local farms will do good things for your karma!

1: It will support at least two local businesses (florist and flower supplier)

2: It will reduce any carbon emissions that would have resulted from having your vendors or flowers flown in. Even a long car ride from another town can be avoided when sourcing local vendors.

Pro: Spray-Free Florals are Safer

Most commercially grown flowers are sprayed with numerous chemicals; from pesticides to keep the bugs away, to preservatives to make them last long periods of transportation. This is especially harmful if you're going to incorporate florals into your wedding cake or dessert. Choosing sustainable, local flower growers allows you to choose spray-free flowers, so you don't need to worry about you or your guests ingesting a chemical cocktail.

Con: Specific Flowers

If your favourite flower is native to your area then you would need to make sure that your wedding date coincides with its flowering season. If your favourite flower does not grow locally then it would have to be flown in from a large, commercial supplier in another country, like Mexico. However, if you are flexible about the specific flowers then going eco should be no problem for an experienced florist who can choose the right flowers to fit your style and colour palette.
